Sussex Advertiser Tuesday May 24th 1842 JOHN LEVETT, 22, servant, pleaded guilty to stealing, at the Parish of St John, Lewes, on the 5th ult., one bottle of port wine and one bottle of ginger beer, the property of Mr Wm. Rose, landlord of the Star Inn - One month's hard labour.
Son John Levett b 1820 went to Tasmania. "17935 John Levett. tried Quarter Sessions, Lewes Sussex 30 June 1845. He was sentenced to 10 years beyond the seas. He embarked on 10th Dec 1845 from London on the Joseph Somes. Arrived in Hobart, Tasmania on 20th May 1846. He was Protestant. Could read and write. His native place was Lewes. He was transported for HM Services Gaol report 2nd-----[word unclear] stated his offence: EMBESSELLMENT OF £25 given to me to put in the Bank for Henruy CLOAK/Clark at ?pfield. [letter unclear] - for a B? the of [?time] the [?month]. Surgeon report: very good.
