Joseph Isger was born in Frome, Somerset, England in 1824. His first known job was as a servant in the household of the local vicar in the Nunney parish, Frome. Joseph moved to London with his elder brother, John and became a draper in the city. He married Sarah in 1848 and two children, Susan and Albert were born in London. Joseph set sail for America on the Sir John Peel, arriving in New York in July 1851 and then moving on to Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Susan and the two children arrived in New York on the SS Northumberland in August 1853. Two more children, Elizabeth and Henry, were born in Carbondale. The Isger families living in America today are descended from Albert and Henry. Carbondale locals may well remember Isger's Dairy owned by Robert and Edward Isger. |
